Translate ‘-ing’ words When you see a word ending in ‘-ing’ you would normally assume it was a verb, but this is often a classic case of where people have to translate for meaning rather than word -for-word . In English, you see, the ‘-ing’ part of a verb is often a noun or adjective.

Let’s look at some examples: 1) Sometimes it’s a verb! If you speak in a progressive tense, this works great in Spanish too. a. ‘I read’ – ‘estoy leyendo’ 2)

In this sense, if a person is doing two things at once, you can use the gerund in both Spanish and English. a. ‘He went away, sing’ – ‘se fue, cantando’ 3)

Sometimes it is a noun. In this case, the use of the gerund in Spanish is incorrect.

Sometimes you use an infinitive, sometimes a different noun, and sometimes you have to rework the sentence! a. ‘Smoking is forbidden’ – ‘está prohibido fumar’ b. ‘I like swimming’ – ‘Me gusta la natación’ c. I’m thinking of living in Spain’ – ‘Pienso en vivir en España’ 4)

Sometimes it is an adjective. In this case you have to find the correct adjective, which will not be the gerund. a. ‘He is a charming man’ – ‘es un hombre encantador’ b. ‘It is a depressing situation’ – ‘es una situación deprimente’ c. ‘His classes are always boring’ – ‘sus clases siempre son aburridas’
