How Prevent Adolescence Suicide – Environmental Threats Part-12

“Teaching society today has become so materialistic;

that they have forgotten their social responsibility”

My dear readers, though I started my series on how to prevent adolescent suicide in January this year, but I am pained to hear that more than six teenagers in India have committed suicide in the last seven days alone, that is from the day of declarations of results of 10th and 12th Central Board of Secondary Examinations. Why should they commit suicide, is the real question to deal with?

In all my previous articles I discussed all the facets of stress, responsibilities of various people parents, teachers and friends including exam-o-mania stress, but while analyzing the death of teenagers on May 30, 2007, I find that we still fall short of identifying the true depth of feelings of despondency among teenagers after results. In my third series, I identified one of the reasons of irresponsible media publishing inaccurate exam results, but there are numerous such factors that make even an outstanding student rethink his own achievements. I have named these challenges as environmental threats and challenges:

One; Irresponsible and unaccountable Education Department. The first and most important factor in making my teenagers commit suicide due to exam-o-mania is the most irresponsible, irresponsible, negligent and narcissistic officials of the Education Department in general all over the third world, especially in India and third world countries. The latest revelation of the evaluation of graduates and post-graduates answer sheets by fifth standard people at a paltry amount of rupees five is an open shameful spot on such department officials. Too crazy for future citizens and students; the country once again awarded various awards to more than 3000 thousand teachers. These people who have been appointed through various quota systems, red tapism, favoritism and nepotism lack the basic character of human sympathy and affection. “Today’s community of teachers has become so materialistic that they have forgotten their social responsibility”. Since most of them were incompetent; but employed to replace hundreds of capable people, they feel no responsibility to any one. Moreover, the corruption in these countries has made such Pillars of National Character (PNC) bloodthirsty tigers. They first work down to see the table smearing; and remains blind to the file lying across the table. During my interaction with a large number of educationists, teachers, I observed the following major problems:

o Unpunctuality. I have observed in the last twenty years of my life, rather I would say after the late eighties in India, that none of the education department officials arrive at office on time. Most of them stay out on one pretext or another until the afternoon, thus making a minor contribution to working hours for actual day official jobs. They also waste working hours for almost an hour every day before and after scheduled tea and lunch breaks. They never forget break timing but never remember office working hours. Six days a week further crippled already chronically ill and crippled departmental official machinery.

· What do you expect from such a race of officials? Under these circumstances, these officials never check any result sheet of students, but blindly sign like blinds on documents put up for signatures by subordinates and colleagues who prepare, check and finalize the drafts, thus leaving huge scope of errors, leading to wrong publication and false results. Any teenager who had high expectations when he finds result below expectation goes into depression, and thus he/she either commits suicide or goes into chronic hopelessness. Instead of punishing such teachers, in fact, most of these officials are regularly rewarded by similar types of officials as educators. I leave it to the readers and judiciary of the countries to make such irresponsible officials accountable and responsible for even the loss of a teenager’s life.

o Since most of such officials are promoted by replacing numerous competent and efficient ones through quotas, red tapeism or political lineage, they are rarely found competent, thus further eroding the strong foundation of the past and sanctifying nations PNC.

o Like most of these officials; who had never seen a rupee five currency note in their childhood or teenage years or until they matured and got the job, now they started getting rupee five hundred/thousand rupee notes as bribe. After bribery scandal exposed in Delhi’s tax department, I noticed that such people stoop so low morally; that they left everything to under-the-table deals, thus playing not only with the lives of teenagers, but also with the future of a country’s generations and PNC.

Two; Careless, incompetent and corrupt paper assessors. The readers will be surprised to know that a large number of cases have come to light, especially in India where illiterate and fifth standard pass unemployed youths have been caught checking the answer sheets of undergraduates and graduates of Masters in Business Administration or higher degree and evaluate courses in Meerut. What a shame for such an education system where the people who have been awarded with numerous awards and honours, such as doctor of literature, etc, have been found deficient in every area of ​​responsibilities towards my teenagers, society and country. On 30 May 2007, a case of such blatant negligence of evaluation came to light in Dehradun where Miss. Srishti Sharma, a class tenth student who was a brilliant and exceptionally studious student and had never scored less than 90% marks till ninth, was declared a failure by the Central Board of Secondary Education, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh in India.

More about the pain of this system is such that these officials avert all their responsibilities by typing a line under all correspondence, that error in the result is not their responsibility. If teenager takes a drastic step and does something wrong, then who is to blame for such lapses. How one corrupt protects others or you scratch my back and I Yours is the basic working environment in India and most of the third world countries. Although, there are some accountability western countries, but incompetent and corrupt judiciary in the third world itself has made such people fearless. There is a need to introduce strong measures against such officials otherwise India and some other third world countries are heading towards a major civil war by mid 2040 AD.

Three; Negligent Brand Compilers. Another external environmental factor revealed after prolonged study is that the scorers, despite failures on both the above levels, are no better. In the name of outsourcing and warding off total responsibility for mistakes, all state education departments have started hiring external agencies; which has nothing to do with anyone but money. When such results are uploaded on the internet or published in local newspaper, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CSBE) in India and similar in other countries, disclaim liability by adding a line that “the Board of Education (EB) shall not be responsible is not for mistakes”. These senseless officials would never realize that teenagers, who have worked so hard over the years, would be despondent or suicidal under depression. It is in fact a disgrace to the country’s education system. The EB Officials (EBO) rather than being proud of publishing correct results, usually follow the irresponsible and sneaky design of Culpable Homicide of Teenagers (CHT). If my teenager who expected more than 90% marks in her 10th board but was declared failed by such an EBO, what should my teenager do? Who should hold parent responsible for CHT of their loved one’s life?

Foursomes; Reckless school administrations. My teenager’s problem is further compounded by what I mentioned through Money Minting Schools (MMS). The administration of such schools not only lack basic human courtesies but also exhibit ‘Too Hoot To You’ (THTY) attitude. Scholl management instead mitigates parents’ and teenagers’ problems due to evaluation errors again their responsibilities from the beginning. This shameful conduct is evident in most of the MMS management. The Western style of Education drive has made third world countries worse victims of such MMS. There is a need for all the governments including UNICEF to intervene and save my teenagers life.

Parents must understand that if such irresponsible officials would not have sat at such a place, you would not have lost your beloved teenager. I would suggest to follow my concept of TECCO (Touch, Educate, Consult, Council and Organize) remedial measures who would lose their loved one due to mistakes of all the characters mentioned above;

A; Become. I believe there is no more important job for any parent than that of their beloved teenager’s future or life. I suggest that parents are requested to be in regular contact with your teenagers two to three days before the announcement of such EB exam results. Never break the physical contact or we would lose our teenager.

B; Educate. Once you have established unbreakable contact, now discuss the possibilities of outcome to educate and prepare your teenager to face the worst. It is possible that irresponsible EBO may have declared an outstanding student; who had never scored less than 90% in the past failed. This EBO can do such miracles to make sure that one more teenager and family fall victim to their irresponsible and irresponsible behavior in a nation. This actually happened to my own daughter Srishti Sharma who was declared failed by CBSE. A student of English Medium since childhood was declared failed in English herself because what I believe her answer sheet was most likely evaluated by some illiterate or uneducated local language qualified teacher. This is a fact of life. She underwent deep depression but my constant interaction was able to regain her confidence, but how long can a teenager sustain humiliation of failure?

C; Consult. I suggest after parent informed the result and its outcome, please consult your child for declarations of such EB miraculous results. Discuss and share every moment through consultation with your teenager so that he is not left alone to take any drastic step. I suggest that if mom is a housewife or part-time worker, she should stay with her teenager twenty-four hours a day until you fix the situation.

D; Council. If your child has gone into deep depression and you are struggling to raise his/her spirits, I suggest taking the help of an expert to bring the teenager out of depression. Remember, your Physical Presence repeating physical presence with your teenager at this moment serves as a separation between what I have called the thin “Line of Life and Death (LLD)”. I would say follow my rule Forget everything, save teenager (FESTIVAL).

E; Organize. After you have brought your teen down to normal behavior, please organize the other events your teen is involved in to educate him about the corrective steps you have taken or are taking. Make sure your child is also taken out of the depressed environment so that he gets a mental break for a few days from Monotonous Stressful Environment of Depression (MSED) at home school and around. Remember when your child interacts with his/her colleagues, he further suffers from the attack of Trauma of Depression (TOD).
